this is no longer an issue i notice samba was working about 2 weeks
ago when i thought I was checking it in vain guess this must have been
resolved by an update

after i did apt-get update && apt-get -y upgrade read the following:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

the desktop is running on lucid the net-book is running on meerkat both
computers were capable of viewing and transferring files between one
another without issues until sometime last week. no major changes have
been made other than the usual update
