Samba server is not included in a usual install of Ubuntu.
In Nautilus :
1st time you check "share this folder" ('partager ce dossier' in french in the
screen copy included) in the folder properties of the folder you want to share

I agree with you : on your computer, it works as I would expect.
My computer was built new this year and I installed 11.10. I upgraded to
12.04 beta version in march I think. I don't think to have installed
very exotic app : only VirtualBox, and Digikam (which is more designed
for KDE).

Quite the same problem : from a system with 10.04, I try to copy files to
another system with 12.04 with rsync. Always errors, because it's not permitted
to write in the new folder rsync as created. And all these folders appears
locked with nobody nogroup owner.
To remove them, I must use a term
