This is my output on trying to upgrade to 5.1 after uninstalling 5.0:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.1

The following extra packages will be installed:
bsd-mailx libmysqlclient16 mailx mysql-client
Actually, after a reboot, I am happy to report, it worked. I am no
longer receving the error and can log into mysql properly.
