I took the information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TakingScreenshots -- who
recommend 8-bit color for screenshots that are going into PDFs. Their
recommendation seems to be based on a compromise between color depth and
file size.

probably a bit out of date, however.

How embarrassing, I meant 24 bits, of course.
If those "8 bits" where meant per channel, that would be the same. But
it's uncommon to specify it that way.
