Is the modem or the router assigning the IP addresses to machines that
connect? I've had some success in turning off DHCP on the wireless
router and letting the modem

Sorry for responding a little late... but i'm still unable to connect... here
is what I get when i type ifconfig I think part of the problem is that i
use a wireless router (Netgear WGR614v6) in between. (wireless is for my laptop
though, whch runs XP) Ubuntu is on my desktop pc.

In Ubuntu network configuration, add DNS 192.168.1.1
Maybe, it will resolve the issue.

starts working (in windows)!!
