DGMcCloud is completely right. Ubuntu is a perfect os, but it has these
"small" problems, that scare new users and they go back to the "good
old" Windows. This issue is far more important than it seems.
However I see 2 comfortable ways how to handle it, until it's solved:

Please, consider this problem serious, cause this bug makes rosegarden
practically unusable. I've seen the same problem in case of more
computers, so it's not a problem of my hardware or something. I'm going

-if u drag&drop a FILE from nautilus to the panel, it will create a
launcher apparently meant to be for an application, not a file (if u hit
properties → browse, it will ask for locating an application).

editor and go: apps → gnome-power-manager → thresholds and change the time
values. "time_action" is the time remaining in seconds when it hibernates (or

In Ubuntu 10.04 (Firefox 3.6.3) I can already play the above mentioned
video, but I'm getting no sounds. Opening it with Totem from
/home/your_username/.mozilla/firefox/qzmk7jxw.default/Cache works
correctly, so the file's not broken. Could somebody try it?

Well, upgrading to daily build (6.0.411.0 (47760) Ubuntu) makes it even
worse, this happens even without an open chat window. It happens only at
startup, when u load gmail in a new tab, it gets back to the original
problem. Very strange...

Oh, I've forgotten an important bug! When I downloaded the iso file for
Kubuntu 9.10 from the official site, the installation always failed for

The only way to learn ALSA master volume in Ubuntu 10.04 is the
terminal, with "alsamixer", after the tooltip for the volume icon in the
Indicator applet. I found this very unuseful. The solution might to re-
enable the tooltips for the Indicator applet.

It happens only in case of one file, otherwise totem works perfectly.
The sound is ok, but the window gets bigger than my screen when I click
to play it. The minimum size of the window somehow changes for this
single file, however it's not even a video, so no reason for that.

program always in this mode, without opening terminal all the time?

Actually u don't need to restart networking or anything else, just
remove the notification area from the panel and add it again and you're

I'm doing the updates through the terminal for now, with the command "sudo
apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". If update manager doesn't work,
it's a quite serious bug. But otherwise ubuntu 9.10 is the best OS I've ever
seen, really great stuff, thanks for that.

Exactly the same problem here. I've tried the last 3 generation of Ubuntu on my
EeePC 1000H, but none of them has been able to run the action assigned to a
critically low battery state successfully. I only remember some 2 or 3 times
when it really happened. And my laptop has shut down unexpected

I have, but rolling it back to max 100% is not helping. I think,
something's changed in the system, cause it's exactly from that time I
see those changes too in the Sound preferences in the menu. If I locate
what caused that, maybe I'll find out the reason.

Problem solved. Finally I managed to get my Windows working and I
realized the same problem there. So, nevertheless, it's apparently my
hardware that's broken. So, sorry for the trouble.
