I installed kernel 2.6.25.1 as advised. Didn't solve the problem,
though. My harddisks are still addressed as UDMA2 and performance is as
bad as with 2.6.24.
BTW: KDE wouldn't start with the new kernel (I'm using Kubuntu). All I
got was the console.

I agree with xor. The java packages are critical applications used by
many people. Not applying the updates that fix their vulnerabilities in
due time undermines the reputation of Ubuntu as a secure operating
system. Fixing them only in Karmic is definitely not enough. And the

Problem solved. I installed Karmic anew using the Alternate CD.
Previously I had installed it anew using the Live CD (with formatting
the root partition and mounting the existing home partition). After all
I don't know what caused and fixed the error. It's working now as
expected.

Jaunty where Virtualbox ran very well with SMP (2 cpus) enabled (and, of
course, VT-x which is required for SMP). I have an Intel Core2Duo E8400
with 3 GHz.
Now under Karmic the situation is considerably worse: With SMP enabled,
I forgot to mention one thing: In the Virtualbox forums there are some
posters who wrote that installing the real time kernel (incl. headers)
improved the performance of Virtualbox considerably. I tried, and it
didn't make a difference for me. But it might be worth a try for others.
(Note, however,
I had the same problem after installing Kubuntu 14.04 64bit. During the
installation process I mounted an existing home partition encrypted with
ecryptfs. Result: The swap partition was not available/mounted. After
manually implementing syscon-hh's solution in the first post, all is
well.

I should have added that sudo blkid reported a different UUID for the
swap partition than the one used in /etc/crypttab. Replacing that one
with the UUID reported by blkid did not solve the problem.

I mean, Kubuntu 12.04 is an LTS version, too. That a (semi-)official
upgrade suggestion dismantles it and nobody seems to care, is rather
weird, IMO.

affecting several pofiles which are in enforce mode. In all these error
messages read access to /etc/ld.so.preload is denied.
According to the kernel protocol the affected profiles on my system are:

Jamie, why don't you want to add these devices? I mean most Nvidia card
users should be affected by this problem. But not all of them are able
to debug AppArmor and to edit the related profile - they would probably
chose to NOT use this FF profile at all. I'm not sure if that's really
what we want.
Or, as a general question: Why don't add rules that don't "hurt" but
improve the acceptance of AppArmor?
