Also, it would be nice that the GUI gives some feedback when it fails
instead of just leaving you there staring at the computer

Sorry for the wait.
If it helps, I've just rebuilt the dosbox in the PPA to the last svn release
and made it available for both zesty and the current development release
(artful).
Tested with DooM in artful and it works correctly

For me the problem was that I had libgles2 installed instead of the alternative
libgles2-mesa. gnome-session-bin depends on one or the other, but at some
point, I got the wrong one.
Maybe for ubuntu, the alternative dependency should be removed as libgles2
makes the system to fallback to llvmpi
Forget my previous comment.
I now have libgles2-mesa without libglvnd0 on sight and the system is still
using the software renderer on intel :(

Public bug reported:
3D acceleration is not working at the moment in Xorg because the
LLVMpipe renderer is used. Instead, the correct Intel driver is used
when trying Wayland sessions.

Shouldn't this info be included in the original report that ubuntu-bug
creates? It would remove the step of asking it later in the bug report

Ok. Is there any other command to run or logs that I can add to spot the
problem of it using llvmpipe?
