I did some search on the internet and here (http://www.mail-archive.com /[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg20842.html) I found someone with the same problem. As for him, setting the card's mode to 16bit/48kHz with six channels resolved the problem, so I guess the problem is converting the between 16 and 26 bit

After an update for udev earlier today the problem seems to have gone. Sound works again and the error isn't raised by Apport. Hal, however, still refuses to run, 'sudo /etc/init.d/hal status' tells me so. Maybe it was indeed related to udev, I'll keep my eyes open for returning symptoms. -- gvf
