i had indeed added a second layout (german neo). removing it solved the problem.

there are some keyboard shortcuts which seem to be mixed up:
ctrl-s opens the "jump to line" input box rather than saves the document
ctrl-w pastes from the clipboard rather than closes a tab
however, all other shortcuts i tried still function the

this problem is not reproducable with a fresh user account. but thie wrong
keybindings are also present when i start gedit as root (sudo gedit). by the
way, my installation of intrepid is a upgrade from hardy.
even when i enable 'Editable menu shortcut keys' in
Menu > S
