In Intrepid amd64 with kernel 2.6.27.18:
If I remove the nvidia-common package, the kernel install "finishes"
without error, but it is not really finishing.
The kernel is never added to /boot/grub/menu.lst and I suspect other
more important steps are being skipped.
I can manually add the kernel

without nvidia-common (no error, no finish).
the /boot/ directory has abi-2.6.27etc for each kernel image except the

Since I had edited my menu.lst by hand in the past (to add Grub
Invaders) the update-grub process was being skipped after the kernel

I have since gotten around this problem. It turns out my initramfs was
broken by having been built while libraries were specified in
ld.so.preload (those needed for dante-client to run in the background).

Could gdm failure be related to this bug? The 2.6.32-16 kernel from
dnjl's ppa fails to boot and I get a mangled screen where I should see
the gdm login. CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots the machine, and the system still
responds to ACPI shutdown from the power switch. Booting without splash
doesn't produce mu
A little further information, I'm having this problem in Lucid Lynx with
libdvdcss2 installed.
Other DVDs from various regions play without issue.
Just one in particular seems not to play.
Perhaps it uses an encoding that is somehow different from the usual?

Why doesn't anyone reply?!
Is anyone even the least bit interested in this problem? It is a very
serious issue for me. I'm a little shocked no one has even asked me for
further detail or recommended some way to log this error. (it does't
seem to log anywhere by the way.. I've checked the logs

In order to get the install to progress I have commented out everything

GtkScrolledWindow widgets (GTK3) have black or transparent
I note that in 2014 I had this problem with gtk 3.14 and Tim had it with
3.7.12.
Was this working with gtk 3.6?
Also, adding overlay-scrollbar (which actually causes the bug) and
Ayatana Design (because I think the Ayatana overlay scrollbars should
come back).

Themes using overlay scrollbars have to set explicitly set backgrounds on
all scrollable widgets

Bug 1367764, seems to have narrowed down the cause and come close to
finding a solution.

bug 420583's proposal great, and it's been sitting there for seven
years.
Seven years ago there was an idea that could probably have avoided all
this trouble.
Did the x time per n characters algorithm ever really get
Use case: Ubuntu derivative/rebranding diversity.
Derivatives might have different interest in notifications; ie some kind
of kiosk distro could intentionally favor full screen, urgency=normal,
as a default behavior while a multimedia desktop may want something like
elementary's wingpanel-indicato
