Bug get out !!!
I follow your instruction, except I've start on my old kernel configured
640x480 :
- when I restart, Nvidia logo appeared in fullscreen, then my "login
screen" in 1280x800 !!
- so I run my user and I can set my screen in correct dimension.
Now, I'll restart on my last kernel...
Bad news !!
bug come back when I start on the last kernel :
- a box appear and ask me to configure video card
- I set a nvidia geforce 8
- It run with 800x600 max
- I try your instruction and restart many times
no positive result

and it was correctly worked with proprietary driver...
untill the latest update :
my laptop start without recognised video card
and now, I only can view at maximum 640x480

I restarted my laptop but I chose kernel "18" instead "19"
My "login" screen was 800x600 and I connected on "admin user"
The file xorg.conf was configured with Driver "vesa" and support only
800x600.
So, I follow your instruction again :
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
- sudo gedit

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nautilus
when I start nautilus, it always open in a fullscreen windows
and I can't come back in normal mode :
- I've tried many shortkeys as 'F11' or 'Alt+space'
- I've looked at many Menu as 'Display' or 'Preferences'
... without success
