I have the same problem on my Intrepid Ibex.
But if I start VMWare console as root (sudo ./vmware-server-console) it works.
When I retry with my normal user, the owner of $HOME/.vmware/preferences has
changed to root.root, and the program start up fails.

I attach the the confguration file that works for me:

The problem is still present in Ubuntu Feisty.
However, I have found a workaround that works for me:
with Kontact inactive I have added to the file
$HOME/.kde/config/kontact_summaryrc in the ActiveSummaries statement the string
"kontact_newstickerplugin".
Therefore the statement now looks like th
