I tried Tristan Schmelcher's workaround (2008-07-03) and it failed
causing erratic behavior with windows.
The only thing I can get to work is to execute the following commands
from a terminal, and then every thing works great.
compiz --display :0.0 --only-current-screen --replace &
compiz --dis
When using multiple monitors using xinerama and expanding to full screen
using windows decoration maximize button in gnome 2.22.2, Firefox 3.0
maximizes filling both screens. Although this may be desireable in some
cases, in my case and possibly others it is not.

I've removed compiz from my 64bit Ubuntu workstation. Every
upgrade/improvement has only made it worse.
If I want to demo it to someone, I have it on my legacy 32bit Unbuntu
workstation. If they ask about the two large displays, I tell them the
truth.

This is repeatable.
Right clicking on screen 2 of 2 opens the context menu. Selecting "Open

The amd64 system has two video cards. Each video card supports only one
monitor. Xinerama, twinview are not used.
Both screens are composited.

The 180 driver was being used by 8.10, and was in use by the system
after upgrade when booted from 8.10 kernel, from proposed I think.
I will test this as soon as a new mainboard arrives (next day or two)
and is installed (original, marginal one failed during repeated
reboots).

After 2008/06/23 update...
After gnome session login, no icons or background image are displayed as
expected
After restart X-server, background and icons are drawn on screen, but compiz
and avant do not work.

cold boot, it now works. avant now also works.
compiz is not in menu: System>Preferences>Sessions>Tab:Startup Programs,
although avant is.

This occurs in xinerama mode.
Spanning multiple montors in fullscreen may not be desirable, especially
if they are different sizes/resolutions.
Disabling xinerama is a work-around.

nvidia-xconfig was not and is not installed. I didn't think it was
supposed to be, so I checked for contention/dependencies before I took
the error message's suggestion, and reported what I found.
the xorg.conf is essentially the same one used on OEL(RHEL) 4.5 and 5.1
that boot on the same system
