in your PC) open a and:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
copy the xorg.conf on a floppy:
reboot your Pc without CD mode and start in vesa mode and copy xorg.conf of
floppy on xorg in Hardy or Intrepid and reboot.

Thank for you attention Connor, I resolved my problem for this way:
I used a copy of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) and run this in "Live Cd mode", open
terminal and:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
And I get my configuration correct, on this I can modification without xorg
its crashing.
My device
Connor, my screen did not have a problem, works perfectly (I have Compiz
effects with Emerald in Xubuntu).
For what make change in the parameters in xorg.conf?

I also have recently been experiencing this bug on an internal drive
/dev/sda5. Ubuntu no longer mounts the drive when it boots. Also I
experience the error message when I attempt to mount the drive by
clicking on the drive in Nautilus. However, I can mount the drive with
the command: sudo moun

When booting up, it halts at a blank screen. The workaround i used was
to add "noapic irqpoll noirqdebug" to the kernel parameters.

When configured for automatic login, booting with a dvd in the drive and a usb
disk inserted those icons are missing from the desktop. Go to desktop settings
and uncheck "Allow Xfce to manage the desktop" and all the icons go away.

Just another confirmation, also with a Radeon 9200. Enabling KMS fixes
this, but introduces mild font corruption. Interestingly, the
corruption isn't present to begin with, and grows worse over time.
Reloading X or restarting clears it up again, for a while.
