In some way, support of Firefox 2 has been drop when I changed
dependency on Firefox >= 3.0 instead of Firefox >= 2.0
About abrowser, as dependency is on Firefox and not Firefox-3.0, it
makes sense to have abrowser or Firefox installed. I could have changed
dependency to firefox-3.0, but I thought
Intrepid.

The same here: with proprietary drivers, I was able to connect to open
routers, but not to my WPA protected one.
Disabling the Atheros proprietary drivers worked (I'm writing this from
Intrepid).

Can you try to disable Atheros proprietary drivers, as indicated in bug #278422?
For me, it worked.
