I have the same kind of sound quality problem, but more related on the
low volume for the microphone. It may be related to some extra gain
control which is not available.

I have the same problem with 2.6.20-16-generic (CD/DVD writer not detected
anymore).
My workaround is to use the previous kernel 2.6.20-15-generic.
