Good news: I found a workaround- but it's not pretty.
If one uses the ijs driver instead of the *recommended* default
gutenprint, then I can print my documents. But AFAICT that option is
only available via an application that is not installed by default
(system-config-printer).

Did you install usb-modeswitch? I have bought a Huawei E1692 the other
day. My old E220 worked pretty out-of-the-box after a firmware upgrade
but the E1692 only showed up as USB storage. Installing usb-modeswitch

Same problem here with a Debian Sid / 2.6.34-1-amd64.
The adapter seems to be in HID mode[1] at boot time, ie wireless
keyboard and mouse are working but in restricted mode (no multimedia
keys, no fn key, etc..).

but since I upgraded to 2.6.31-12.39 the system freezes (even Magic
SysRq don't work).

Karmic it's to the point of not being useable.

Exact same problem here but for me it happens with both Desktop Icon NG
extension enabled or disabled. This is pretty annoying since the only
workaround is to logout and login again. And I use Ctrl+Tab a lot which
totally breaks with this bug.

Same for me: ubuntu 18.04 just installed on Dell Precision M3800.
Before I was on 16.04 and CPU temp during normal session was about 47-55
deg.
Now, it's constantly at 63-80 deg.
