What hsfmodem driver are you using, the one from LINUXANT, how did you
install your driver. This is a fairly new install of Karmic, and I've
got the 1:.0.9.21 packages installed.

Okay. Problem solved.
The issue was resolved by:
(1) Uninstalling OpenOffice via Synaptic
(2) Uninstalling Bonager. This was a bit of a bear - should've been
unistalled BEFORE I install jaunty (from Intrepid). In any case these
commands did the trick:
sudo update-rc.d -f bonager remove
sudo

I also have this bug in Karmic Koala (all updates). This appears to
be an error between FSpot and Gnome. If I manually unmount the camera
BEFORE launching FSpot, all is working. FSpot needs to be patched to
have an umount script just prior to initialising.

Hello Daniel,
I marked it as pulseaudio because the snd module wouldn't load after the
pulseaudio update. Therefore, I assumed there has to be a bug somewhere
in the pulseaudio package.
I'll refile against alsa-base, HOWEVER, it may be related to my cupsd
not starting

The pulseaudio update clashed with the Linuant modem driver and
completely hosed the sound system. Uninstalling the hsfmodem and the
alsa-linuant packages, rebooting and reinstalling the modem packages
solved the issue. Bizzare that the pulseaudio upgrade hosed the sound
whereas the dist-upgrade
Hmm, I'll try Cyril's fix and post back.. I just upgraded from Jaunty.
This WILL BE a major showstopper for a lot of people.
EDIT: Cyril, how did you manage to do this without uninstalling the

Need some help. I tried a "reinstallation" of the three packages
(upstart, sysv-rc and insserv) and got and Error 2 sysv-rc. Now during
a reboot there is a very long pause - 5 minutes where the machine is
trying to find a list of modules to load a boot. How do I fix this?

Well, according to LINUXANT technical support. Their driver works on
Karmic Koala. I'm inclined to agree with them as I was JUST using
Interpid Ibex and the LINUXANT driver and my modem worked on this same
machine. I then did a fresh install of Karmic Koala and now this same
modem (same LINUXANT

Installed LINUXANT modem driver for HSF modem and it kills all sound,
and modem does not work. Same modem, same laptop, same LINUXANT driver
worked with Intrepid Ibex. Seem to be a bug in the Karmic Koala
Pulseaudio configuration.

It works.
I installed it TWICE, and now for some reason it all worked. The first
install doesn't take for some reason, but rebooting and manually
installing the HSF driver package from LINUXANT again make it work.

Thanks for the extra info, yep I can confirm this on my machine as
well. A development since I posted this bug: If I switch to compiz,
then the presenter console behaves almost as expected (it shows up on
the correct screen, but the panels are on top of it where they should be

Okay, did what you asked. I can confirm that this bug DOES NOT show
up with the official OpenOffice packages and using the Sun Presenter
Console 1.02 Extension. The presenter console works perfectly with
either metacity or compiz activated. It appears to be the Ubuntu
specific distr
