The pulseaudio update clashed with the Linuant modem driver and completely hosed the sound system. Uninstalling the hsfmodem and the alsa-linuant packages, rebooting and reinstalling the modem packages solved the issue. Bizzare that the pulseaudio upgrade hosed the sound whereas the dist-upgrade
