Since my original post I've upgraded my video card to a Radeon 9550. I
installed the proprietary ATI drivers, and have not had a problem with
the resolution. Not to say there have been no other problems -- I get
mysterious crashes. But those are off topic here.

a LG Flatron T710BH monitor
