I too have this problem.  I am using an old ATI Rage 128 video card, and
a LG Flatron T710BH monitor

I have a feeling this is a problem that could be fixed manually if I
spent enough time digging in the forums and fooling around with
xorg.conf, but we have software (ddprobe) that can detect the possible
resolutions and refresh rates, why not use it?
