I just installed fresh and latest version of Ubuntu 10.04.
I tried to install the official last driver for graphic card GeForce 8600.
I installed the next packages:
# sudo aptitude install linux-headers-`uname -r`
# sudo aptitude install build-essential
# sudo aptitude ins

I did the next:
# sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and put there this code:
vga16fb
nouveau
And started to compile driver once again. I did't get the first error "THE
DISTRIBUTION-PROVIDED PRE-INSTALL SCRIPT FAILED."
but I've got another error. Text of this error is below:
"Error:
I will try this way:
# sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run -k $(uname -r)

free driver nouveau from your system before you installed proprietary
driver from NVidia?

This is unacceptable and disturbing change.
In Ubuntu 14.04 still work upstart and not systemd.
I don't see even one reason, why init script shouldn't work properly.
More than this, I don't see any reason, why there is no comment or warning when
I use /etc/init.d/netwroking restart
