I'm using an old Dell Latitude C600, with an ATI Mobility 128 graphics

The 'bug' --- random freeze ups on shutdown, with the screen
progressively whitening out --- has occured on this machine as long as I
have had Ubuntu on it (3 or so years). I have used other distros for
short periods, but

I would like to confirm this bug. I have only started to have problems
with automatic wifi connection since running the Hardy beta. Doing sudo
/etc/init.d/networking restart seems the most convenient way of
overcoming it until there is a proper fix.

Hi Saïvann,
Sorry about this; it's all got pushed into the background by other
things.
1. If you disable usplash from the Grub menu.lst file, do you still get this
problem (I just want to make sure).
Yes, the problem remains, though if I can switch cleanly into a virtual

I am getting the white screen freeze
almost every time I try to shutdown.

The *very* preliminary results (two shutdowns) are encouraging---no

Okay, shutting off usplash in /boot/grub/menu.lst has not worked, so I
will be installing the Hardy beta and hoping that does the trick.

I'm afraid this problem has reappeared (at least for me) in the Hardy

in Gutsy, nor, I think, in Feisty.

Now I have installed the Hardy beta. It's only been in for 24 hours but
the results so far are not encouraging, so perhaps there is some kind of

I should add that this problem only applies to running the live CD. The
actual installation sets xorg.conf correctly.

Editing /etc/network/interfaces to just keep the loopback and "auto eth0",
followed by a reboot (not sure what needs bouncing) did the trick for me.
No further ado: The "ifupdown" device disappeared from nm-applet and "Static
eth0" reappeared, configured as before.
