Jergen, you may well be right. When I first posted the description of bug #71004 fitted my experience.
Now I have installed the Hardy beta. It's only been in for 24 hours but the results so far are not encouraging, so perhaps there is some kind of hardware fault (I don't think so as the graphics run perfectly except at shutdown), or some other software glitch to do with shutting X down.
