package update
I had the same problem today.
Was bound to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 server because of no more repositories
access.
The Cups server, when I try to administer from remote, asks user/password
then hangs forever.
Lost a tremendous amount of time trying different configurations,
reading manuals et
The bug is still there. Nobody seems to care about it but: 1) it makes
access to old documents and sources (those filed in floppy disks) almost
impossible. When floppy is connected it is identified as
"CITIZEN_X1DE_USB" after that it is not recognized as a block device.
Shall I give up every hope
It might be a malfunction related to some obscure aspects of firefox. I
connected with "seamonkey" and could successfully administer the
printer(s). Don't have any idea about the intrinsic nature of the bug.
Just tried. (Plug and Pray?)

Solved with this workaround:
1) Install cups-pdf
2) Set cups-pdf as default printer (This builds the queue as expected)
3) Set the HPLIP printer as default printer.
Now lpq shows the HPLIP printer queue as expected.
Printing to default lp works again.
