While I might argue with your assertion about moving Windows (having
done it), it side steps the point: this bug means that you cannot even
do a fresh install of windows on these partitions.

Sorry, didn't see Niklas' comment before responding.
I'm pretty sure it was a kvm issue because it didn't even start booting
windows. However, I won't be able to do any core dumps or crash logs as
I've blown all the little partitions away and now run all the vms from
virtual disks.
Happy for you

I have this same behaviour on one machine after upgrading to Jaunty.
After logging in, the screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor.

I can ssh to the machine fine.
Screensaver seems to work - the mouse cursor disappears and reappears on being

Found my problem - may not be this bug after all.
For some reason the upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 must have messed up.
"gnome-session" wasn't installed.
There seem to be a few other bit's and pieces "lost" but now at least I
can start tracking them down.

I'm certainly experiencing this behaviour in my newly upgraded Jaunty

I have a similar error. I am also using Hardy. but with keymap us.
I haven't noticed the connection with the caps lock key.
My symptoms are that I will use the key combination CTL+Shft+arrow key
and either or both of the CTL and Shft keys acts "stuck". e.g ctl+c
just give "c" rather than "copy".
Note that you need to uninstall the "feisty" version of vmware server
before installing the tarball version.
Unfortunately, synaptic doesn't remove everything - which prevents you
from installing the new version.
I had to delete the /etc/vmware directory to allow the new version to
install. This

Attached is all the output to the terminal. For some reason it just
stops half way through a line.
Interestingly (?) about half the time starting open office from a
terminal had open office crash in a way that was handled (i.e. it said
"unexpected error" and closed.) rather than the usual freeze.
My experience, and discussion on the Ubuntu forum, suggests that this is
an issue with the upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy. New Gutsy installations
didn't have the problem.
Changes to xorg.conf were all in vain (and all the helpful comments from
people who had done fresh installs of Gutsy were worse

Excellent. Using the Human theme solves the problem.
I had seen that bug but hadn't connected it with this behaviour because
the symptoms are so different.
Thanks!

This issue has not gone away but the vmware server packages in the
feisty repositories are not being updated, nor is there a gutsy
version at all.
There are two alternatives that I can see:
- Address this issue as part of providing updated packages.
- Remove vmware server from the ubuntu reposit

I think this is the same as the bug I experience - when working on the

Well, you do what you must.
It still occurs as described. I was loading the debugger every time I

as I stopped it did it again. (Now if there was some way to get the

I'm still trying to get a backtrace. It seems to be happening less

I am using Ubuntu Feisty which I upgraded from Edgy.
Will send backtrace when I can reproduce the error under gdb.
