I have this same behaviour on one machine after upgrading to Jaunty. After logging in, the screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor.
CTL+ALT+F1 works. I can ssh to the machine fine. Screensaver seems to work - the mouse cursor disappears and reappears on being moved. There are no errors in the xorg log. ~/.xsession.errors has the following: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... /etc/profile: 29: [[: not found Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_NZ.
