Take a look at the bug data of duplicate bug 262981, which is a similar
crash. There a message was selected and delete button was pressed.
Only thing I noticed in both cases is that the internet connection was
unstable and slow at the time, but that shouldn't have made evolution

I've had this problem in Gutsy and Hardy both, so a WONTFIX saying works
with Hardy won't be right.

One of my recent updates resulted in the same thing. I'm relieved that
the solution is to just to raise the PCM volume. I have had this before
when I had upgraded to Intrepid, and couldn't find a resolution so did a

I also confirm that the new jar fixes the UI issue. Can we get the fix

Confirming this bug, it is still happening on Gutsy RC. Difference was I
did a fresh installation, so no backup kernel to fall back to. Booted
from the LiveCD, chrooted into the installation and then ran the
commands specified here followed by depmod. Finally I'm able to boot

Thanks for this update Ben. I have an Acer Aspire 4520 which has nVidia HDA
card with Realtek ALC268 codec. Installing linux-backports-modules-generic
solved my sound problem.
Only thing is that I had to manually add this line at the bottom of
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to make the sound work:

This error still shows up on Gutsy Final, but now only once in a while.
When it drops me to the shell I reboot, and almost all the time it boots
properly. If it doesn't, I reboot again until it finally boots.

I don't have much knowledge of this stuff, but Windows XP is able to
detect the MAC address correctly (and it is the same every time) - so
probably it's not a hardware fault?
But yes, it can be a kernel bug as you said. Can someone confirm if this
should be reassigned to the kernel?

More information: people have reported it works if "all_generic_ide" is added
to the grub boot parameters. This, however, reduces the hard disk performance
significantly.

I have updated the summary to reflect the current state - as already mentioned
in the comments the problem is present in the Gutsy release as well.
Also in my case it is a fresh install (starting from Gutsy RC), so I removed
the "upgrade" part from the summary.

Some additional information after reading a few threads in forums:
The issue seems to be with various Acer Aspire models.
Also, some mention in a thread that disabling acpi during boot fixes the
problem (acpi=0). However, that is not a feasible option for laptops.

et59, for sound, try installing the package linux-backports-modules-generic.
After that add this line at the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
On next reboot, sound should work.
