Well, what can I say, today aide surprised me with a successful run
without any changes to aide itself. But yesterday some updates got
installed, so I guess one of them was responsible. They were:
glibc-doc (2.12.1-0ubuntu9) to 2.12.1-0ubuntu10
icedtea-6-jre-cacao (6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu1) to 6b20-1
Same for me.
With -V255 I see that aide had worked on a few items before aborting
(looks like it fails just before storing some data "... attr=..." and
"Adding child ..." is missing):

I've tracked down to some entries in one of my own config files (which
haven't been changed and worked before). I've got a file called
/etc/aide/aide.conf.d/30_local_31_override containing some - well -
overriedes for later config files. If I activate any of the following
entries, aideinit aborts

Compiz in Maverick has a bug calculating the correct placement in
Maverick when using a negative geometry value to place a window at/near
the right and/or lower edge. The following worked correctly in Lucid
and still works with Metacity:
