I've managed to fix it by using NVidia driver version 173.14.09.
Possibly the drivers are to blame?

Yup, having the same problem. Graphics are NVidia 8400 GS (driver is
169.12), also using Compiz and aMSN. On 8.04 Hardy 32bit.
