I'm seeing very similar behavior from my install of 8.10 on a HP 6910p.
dmesg has the following repeatedly:

I think this is probably a duplicate of

report first but #286285 seems to have more information and still match

I've the same problem with my 5th gen iPod, the ipod worked fine in
Jaunty. Rythmbox detects the ipod. Is this related to the hal
deprecation?

I updated to version 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.1 yesterday and my problems with
mysql hanging on start up have gone away.

I'll take that back. Its failing again after a reboot.
After I get the hung instance stopped sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-
server-5.1 fixes the problem until reboot.

I have a similar problem. When I dock my laptop at work its connected to
a pair of external monitors which for some reason I've needed a shell
script to configure them. However at some point in the karmic release
cycle the script stopped working. The DVI output doesn't change
resolution and the VGA

Further information
The steps I have to take are:
Switch off the laptop's own display (LVDS1)
Add the correct mode to VGA1
Set HDMI1 to the correct resolution
Set VGA1 to the correct resolution and move it to the right of HDMI1

I've done a bit more testing.
The problems with the VGA out happen when the laptop lid is closed. If I
boot and run the script nothing changes. When I open the lid both
external displays go to the correct resolution in clone mode. I suspect
there is something funny going on with detecting how to u
rhythmbox 0.12.5-0ubuntu1 is certainly marked as a dependences of
libflac8. I'd updated to 0.12.5-0ubuntu1 before realising you were
looking for an update. As I already have libflac8 installed I can't test
on my system, but the dependency is captured so I believe its fixed.
