Gutsy or Feisty). When I noticed vlc was not installed properly (that is
had generic icon in menu) so attempted to reinstall had the above issue.

I've had the same issue on a similar spec system using Gutsy with
2.6.22-14. I installed the Hardy kernel 2.6.24-16 from backports (sam,e
thread as linked above) and it has now fixed this issue - had to do some
other tweaks to get hibernate working (to do with 7900GS, setting no
POST on resume in
boots, it's scanned for channels and found some. I have even seen the
epg, video and recording all working...
I am sure there is tonnes more information you'll need, but I am new to
Linux, so please point me in the right direction to get you the info you
need.

I switched from KDE and couldn't quite believe that there really wasn't
an answer for Gnome, especially with the fantastic new multiple-desktop-
manager :(

I get a very similar crash here, and have verified it doesn't happen in
the non-Ubuntu version of Thunderbird direct from Mozilla.
It happens only on specific emails in Inbox - one from a website I
registered with, and another from an Outlook 2007 (on XP) account that I

thunderbird-dbgsym 2.0.0.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 (latest version of
-dbgsym). Action to cause the crash was just to select a message that
I know uses the Calibri font.
I do have Calibri installed according to fc-list and KDE Font Install

One interesting workaround, though it does require gksudo, is to simply
do: gksudo kcontrol. This generated the following konsole output:

I found quite a good workaround (gksudo kcontrol) that seems to fix the
DCOP server setup so that plain kcontrol works afterwards - not sure how
long the fix will last though.

I get my finger of the pad.
When I check with synclient -m 1 I see the x coordinate and y coordinate reset
to some fixed values. Also the "z" and "f" value change randomly.

@heu: Perhaps you have a different variant of this problem. The default
Ubuntu/Kubuntu setup is that your hostname has an entry for 127.0.1.1 in
the /etc/hosts file, but it would be good if those who still have this
problem can test this.

This is a real pain on larger displays (e.g. mine is 1680x1050). It's
also an accessibility issue - those with motor control problems may find
it very hard to position the mouse to drag a window even on smaller
displays such as 1280x1024 17" monitors.
