I have the same issue here, VLC was installed prior to 8.04 (probably on Gutsy or Feisty). When I noticed vlc was not installed properly (that is had generic icon in menu) so attempted to reinstall had the above issue. Then uninstalled vlc and plugins (pulse and esd), then re-installed and the bug listed came up after it appears to have installed the program and appears to also work.
