well, yes. we need some way to reproduce this problem.
at least for me, both totem and vlc work just fine. Is this problem
happening with any video file or only with some?

emacs-snapshot ships a rather recent copy of gnus internally.
please try to remove the gnus package and use the internal copy of
gnus. does this solve the problem?
