Further info (amd64): Admin login window fails whether or not another
admin process is started before of after.
The Admin login window attempts to launch, but fails without complaint.
Meanwhile, the hard drive goes into perpetual search activity. The

Confirmed, in a different way (i386):
When it hangs at boot, I was able to get to the text display. The last
few lines were
Kinit: trying to resume from /dev/dis/by-uuid/[code]
Kinit: no resume image. doing normal boot
End of story. The [code] was NOT the uuid of any device on my system.

I have been able to solve the problem, thanks to an Ubuntu forum post.
However, it might still be a bug, since not everyone will find the
solution.
The problem was that the ATI flgrx driver failed to load with kernel
-16, as of the time I originally posted this bug.
But flgrx still worked in kern
In the intervening time, the problem has been fixed, on Ubuntu Hardy
amd64 and i386, at least for my system. Another user discovered that at
boot, module ssb and the wireless module loaded in incorrect order. He
posted an init script that forced module load in the correct order. That

On this machine, regexxer works perfectly on karmic, fails on lucid.
Regexxer is stable and has not been changed for awhile. I have tried
this with the pre-compiled program obtained via Synaptic, and also by
compiling from source on this machine,
