In the intervening time, the problem has been fixed, on Ubuntu Hardy amd64 and i386, at least for my system. Another user discovered that at boot, module ssb and the wireless module loaded in incorrect order. He posted an init script that forced module load in the correct order. That solved the problem for myself, and for some other users who had experienced a similar problem. I do not know if the fix has been included in recent updates. But since my wireless now works correctly, I have no error log that would be useful.
