What actually happens, is that the update keeps the 0.9x grub, but
updates the format of /boot/grub/menu.lst to a format which seems to
me to be a bit less human-friendly, using hex labels like in recent
installer-created versions of /etc/fstab. So I did let the upgrade
happen, finally.
I would as
I'll test that tomorrow - possibly after further upgrades.
What should be the state of /etc/network/interfaces before trying
this? - before booting?
Should this be run from the System>Preference menu or from the
network-manager-applet icon on the upper panel?
One issue which I keep repeating is
This is STILL not working for me. (I just reinstalled network-manager
and network-manager-gnome a few minutes ago).
If I start with /etc/network/interfaces in a 'clean' state - just
showing the loopback interface, and try to set the IPv4 network
parameters, including IP, mask. gateway, and an addi
Also I've attached a tar file containing the contents of
/etc/NetworkManager/
It appears the settings I've made are actually saved here, but I don't
know how to make networking use settings in this place.
Possibly there is some setting necessary to make networking use this

The internal wireless controller is:

I've attached the /var/log/dmesg file
As of today, the 'cardbus cards' message no longer appears, but now text

It is possible to switch in and out of a console with ctrl-alt-Fn and

Since comment #6, and some updates, what happens now is that the
multicolored bitmap screen appears while logging out or shutting down
out of Gnome/X.
This is something that used to happen on this system several versions of
Ubuntu ago.
Also, on trying to shut down one time, the Shut Down and Res
