Just so I understand, it sounds to me like when I install Ubuntu from a
USB cdrom drive it will add an entry to /etc/fstab for that removable
drive. However, once you remove that drive from the system (as you may
have only wanted to use it for the install) the drive is now invalid.

I can't believe I forgot to say what version of Ubuntu I was using. :-/
Anyway, I'm using Intrepid Alpha 4. However, an update to
network-manager-gnome and network-manager-openvpn today seems to have resolved
this issue. I guess the feature was just not implemented yet.

Hmm... I don't think so as I have different symptoms. In bug #301755 it
sounds like they are reporting interference from the rest of the system
causing a crackling noise. In my case the only sound that is emitted is
the crackling. Please let me know if I'm mistaken.

I cannot start gnome-terminal. If I open an xterm and start gnome-
terminal from the command line, here is what I get:

This same feature is required for devices with Ubuntu installed using

I have been seeing this bug since early last week and despite two
updates to udev. I thought the syslog might be useful as it contains
the relevant errors.
Below is a sample of those errors. These come up repeatedly throughout
boot.

I'm encountering. The /var/log/gdm directory exists and is not mounted
any differently.
@Klaus - `sudo restart gdm` has no effect. `sudo start gdm` returns a
PID, but does not start gdm. Running `sudo status gdm` immediately

Binary package hint: banshee
While in Banshee I enabled the "Notification Area" plugin because I
wasn't seeing the notification area icon at the top. Banshee
immediately crashed and I am unable to start it again. I tried going
into gconf-editor and unsetting the
/apps/bansh

I would argue that this is critical if we are to replace Shotwell with
F-Spot. Many users will not (or cannot) migrate from F-Spot to shotwell
and risk losing all their tags, modifications, Favourites and ratings.
