Public bug reported:
All the disk utilities I have running under Edgy (Gnome) misread the free and
used space on one partition in particular (a couple others are incorrect, too,
but not by nearly as much). I haven't had any luck getting an answer on
UbuntuForum.org. Here is the thread:

I forgot to mention the partition is question is dev/hda6.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: alsa-base
Feisty Fawn.
The packages alsa-base and alsa-utils are not upgrading correctly. They
are both listed in device manager. Here is the error message I got in
Device Manager:
"E: /var/cache/apt/archives/alsa-base_1.0.13-3ubuntu1_all.deb: subproces
Thanks for replying. There is a file named alsa already in the /etc
directory so I can't use that name. Here is the error:
"mkdir: `/etc/alsa/dev.d/': Not a directory"
I tried in nautilus (as root) but was also denied.
I've posted another bug report specifically on alsa-base. Hopefully that
will
I haven't mixed any packages that I'm aware of. I got the snd-ice1712 driver
from ALSA as I was advised on Ubuntuforum.org. The alsa-utils is from the
repositories. I don't know enough to make changes to the default install. I
certainly wouldn't change the directories where the files installed.
What can I do to get this upgrade to work. Edgy is somewhat flaky, now.
There are 352 updates listed in update-manager and the upgrade button
for Feisty is gone. I don't know if I should DL these updates. Edgy was
up to date before attempting the upgrade.
What about just updating the ALSA files?
I discovered something that might make a difference. I unmounted volume
hda6 (now sda6 in Feisty) and the used and free space are shown
correctly in the installed version of GParted. When the volume is
mounted these parameters are shown incorrectly. Of course, it is empty
in Nautilus.
I sure wish
With repeated attempts I was able to get Feisty installed. There are two
ALSA updates in Update Manager. When trying to install them I get the
following error:
"E: /var/cache/apt/archives/alsa-base_1.0.13-3ubuntu1_all.deb: subprocess
pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

Here is a spreadsheet I put together. It shows the results of running an
installed version of Gparted, the property pages from Nautilus, and the
Edgy LiveCD version of GParted. These are the partitions that have
problems. I've highlighted the trouble spots. The LiveCD version of
GParted is the only
