Public bug reported: Doing a normal upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04 LTS. Upgrade of systemd-sysv failed, causing all kinds of trouble for many following packages, I had to click OK at least 30 times. Eventually the upgrade was aborted, with a message that the machine might be in an unusable state.

Hi James, The work-around you suggest works, I've used it many times. It does not cure the root cause though. The problem comes back after each reboot. It seems the root cause is mongodb being started by both /etc/init.d/mongodb as well as the newer upstart mechanism. They behave slightly differe
