I have a similar problem, but a different outcome. The first time I
press the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon, my PC freezes for a
good 2 or 3 minutes - long enough to make me walk away from the machine
and come back later. But then the window has opened to give me the

Likewise, upgrade from 11.04. However when selecting shutdown, it drops
me to a login box. Selecting shutdown from there does nothing at all.
Only solution is to log back in and shutdown from a sudo terminal
session.
Tried unity --reset to re-build/re-install unity, but didn't make any
difference.
I'm getting the same in unity (3d). Shutdown results in logout. Shutdown
from login screen results in no action. Only way to shut down is to
press and hold the power button :) or to log back in and shutdown via
sudo from a terminal session.

Noticed my updates weren't set to "immediate". Changed it, checked for
updates, installed a few and now both Shutdown and USB support are
working fine.
11.10 is much slower to startup and shutdown compared to the the
lighteningly quick 11.04, but at least my major issue(s) are now fixed.

Just noticed I can't either mount any usb devices (micro SD, USB stick,
removal hard disk etc) OR shutdown. When I select Shutdown from the
menu, the pc drops back to a login box. If I select shutdown from the
login box, nothing happens. Restart works ok.
