I have a similar problem, but a different outcome. The first time I press the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon, my PC freezes for a good 2 or 3 minutes - long enough to make me walk away from the machine and come back later. But then the window has opened to give me the options. I lock screen. Come back later and carry on working. Subsequent presses of the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon seem ok.
Ubuntu 7.10 - Nvidia GeForce 6600GT using Nvidia Graphics - note: I had the same problem on the supplied graphics driver and I have tried both 64bit and 32bit distros. The pc is an AMD 64bit 3.8GHz Athlon. Thoughts? Or is my issue covered elsewhere? if it is, apologies, but this was the closest I could find...
