based graphics-card. But it would be helpful, if you could further
describe your hardware-configuration. That's generally a good idea :)
What you describe sounds very likely to be the well-known shortcoming of
the Xorg's DRI.

While trying to free some hd-space on 100 MBytes large /boot-partition,
I got errors from the update-initramfs script, which tried to generate a
new initrd.img for linux-ubuntu-modules. Becaue my /boot-partition is
100% full this failed.

I can confirm Greg's findings. Just skipping the patch "132_composite-
no-clipping.diff" every OpenGL-based program I tried (glxgears, lowfat,
blender, gl-gst-player, neverball) did not crash Xorg anymore. This was
done on a GeForce 8800 GTS using the 100.14.11 driver (installed via the

I've looked at the drawing-artefact of the shadow and my best guess is
that it is a texture-coordinate mixup of the XRender-related EXA-
drawing. It looks like some texture-coordinate "index" is offset by one
in regards to the corresponding quad-vertex. Each shadow-texture is
turned clock-wise by 9

It also could be a transposed matrix of the texture-coordinates causing

I reproduced your steps and could not witness the described error
printed into ~/.xsession-errors. I tried it with Feisty Fawn Beta and
Ubuntu 6.10. Neither under metacity nor compiz I see any errors printed
to ~/.xsession-errors when moving cairo-clock around.

I just witnessed an odd behaviour. When I unplug the power-cable from my
i915-based laptop and the CPU-throttling kicks in (going from 2 GHz to
about 800 MHz). Once that happened all the sluggish drawing performace
of OpenGL- and cairo-based programs gets smooth as silk again. I'm

VGN-S580BH, which has a ICH6M-based sata-controller, on the sata-
harddisk. I used the daily-built feisty ISO from 23th march 2007. So
finally I'm able to run Feisty on the laptop, thanks for that!

It's actually a bug in gtk+. The way the GtkEntry widget is implemented
makes it impossible to work (read: look) correct with RGBA-windows using
transparency. The right way to fix this is to re-implement GtkEntry's
correctly making it work with RGBA or as a nasty work-around
"quick&dirty"-style rip

Sofar I can say that it seems to be a bug in metacity (without
compositor enabled). If you try compiz, mutter or metacity (with
compositor) this bug doesn't occur. I'm still looking deeper into this
issue, to find the real cause of it. But for the moment you can work-

Branch lp:~macslow/notify-osd/fix-559109 holds the fix to this bug. It's
up for review and will either make its way into Lucid as a distro-patch
or new release. I'll leave that to the desktop-folks to decide.

It has to be a g-p-m issue. notify-osd by itself doesn't trigger
anything. It is a daemon an just sits there waiting for something to
display.

Turned out to be a bug in notify-osd after all. It's an edge-case in the
blur-cache-regeneration-prevention. Working on a branch fixing this here

I've updated the branch lp:~macslow/notify-osd/fix-546650 fixing the
"hide on mouse-over" for the non-composited case. Works now as before.
Still have to test it with older gtk+-versions (and on karmic). But if
anybody is impatient, they can pull from that branch.

Ok, the branch has been reviewed and approved. It's commited to lp
:notify-osd/lucid now. I'm about to roll a new notify-osd tarball
(0.9.28).
