I reproduced in Gusty (ubuntu).
When trying to add a new user:
- Click "System" -> "Administration" -> "Users and Groups"
- Click "Add User"
- In the "Real Name" field, type a name, for example, "dave"
- Fill in the password, etc
- Click "OK"
- Close the "Users and Groups (User settings)" window

Sorry...2 mistakes in prior post...
1 ) "dave"= User Name, not Real Name
2) of course i omitted the final step...
- Add user name "dave"
