It looks I have the same. I was playing with gnome-sound-properties
changing Audio Conferencing->Sound Capture combo and crush dump was
generated. Now Sound Preferences hangs for a while if I touch this
combo.
I may add more info if it's required. Crash dump attached: it looks like
kind of infinit

Thanks, now it works!
I removed PA completely mainly due to 2 facts:
1) PulseAudio ALSA emulation is far from perfect, applications written to use
ALSA don't work properly with PulseAudio
2) There are still many apps not written to use PulseAudio backend, most
notable include Flash and Wine.

not everything that you wrote above worked for me. Here is my workaround for
the problem:
1) uninstall lirc-modules-source (if installed)
2) install lirc-nct677x-1.0.4-ubuntu9.10.deb (it patches
