One thing you can try is hitting escape before the computer boots, then hitting the Edit button, then goto the kernel line, edit again, and add pci=nomsi to the command line right after quiet and splash. Converted from 7.10 to 8.04 on the release version earlier today Using the AMD64 version of ubuntu. I ran into this problem on an ATI690 chipset based board. It was giving me a ATA1.00: failed to IDENTIFY error message. 2.6.22 still booted as normal. Searching for this turned up a hit with the
