Hi, done it again as "su". It seems the outcome is the same.
I have updated the system with latests packages and remove the performance
indicator from the top bar. No it seems working better, although fan is at full
throtlle from time to time, and you can see compiz reaching 60%-70% of cpuload.
Yep, I have the installation by default. My hardware is almost 4 years old, so
no 3D sorry. With 12.04 I didn't have any top unity feature and it was fine for
me. I'l check the other bug if there's a way to disable the special effects
until is fix.

New DELL keyboards haven't Numlock key but BIOS config has "Numlock
active" on "Yes". I've have changed it to "No" and problem vanishes.
I suppose the system tries to change Numlock state and, if no movement
is detected on keyboard or mouse all two became hanged.
I have the same problem with Dell Inspiron 3847, but I've solved using
an older keyboard, not Dell.
I suspect the problem is in Dell keyboard and/or mouse.

I guess misery loves company. What a nightmare. I also lost my sound
when I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04. I have a Creative Xmod I have tried
to do everything people suggested in other forums: install pulseaudio,
uninstall pulse audio, reinstall gnome-alsamixer... the works. I cannot
get sound back.
I forgot to say my other sound card is a via-8237.

We made a fresh 18.04 LTS Lubuntu 64 bits install + updates on Acer
TravelMate B118-M (2019), booting with Secure Boot Disabled. Ok!
We clone this installation to Acer TravelMate B117-M (2018, 2017),
booting with Legacy mode. We had the problem.

Two Wi-Fi network applets appear after logging back int
Exec=/bin/bash -c "sleep 2 && nm-applet"
in /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet
seems to be a good workaround for my computers.
Both computers are using SSD disk. So, fast start-up.

You are right!
It not depends of the video card! It happens also with my i915 video
card.
After black screen with:
$ light-locker-command -l
typed my user password and hit the Enter key and returned to my
session!!!

Same problem. Very easy to test/reproduce doing:
$ light-locker-command -l
I can return to my session doing Ctrl+Alt+F1 + Ctrl+Alt+F7 and waiting
unlock for the greeter.
