I've booted the live Jaunty VGA disconnected, switched to UXA; same symptoms.

Is this always an issue? Are you sure you have all dependencies installed
correctly?
I notice that aspell is a dependency, so if it were not available, this could
lead to this behavior.
One way to test would be to issue that command in a terminal:

The message show in /var/log/messages; afterward it's the first one of
/var/log/syslog. Log seems to have been rotated.

Yes, this is very annoying with etckeeper. This is also incompatible with
read-only root.
A solution would be either migrate constantly modified files to /var (losing
etckeeper tracking) or just avoid replacing the file when changing nothing. I
think staying in /etc would be better to preserve t
