I have tried more or less all the different boot options suggested. I have two
perhaps interesting details regarding this problem:
1) my system worked for two weeks before failing to find
Tested all the boot options suggested here and in related bugs (have a link
list in bug #305714); nothing helps.
Tested (almost) all BIOS settings and physical connectors; nothing helps.

like a healthy "pre-boot". Sinc
Reinstalled 2.6.27-7 from a 8.10 LiveCD I burned oct 29.
Worked smoothly and system started from HDD after that.
Then repeated "dangerous things":

2) upgrade to 2.6.27-9 by accepting all 158 updates available is next up:
rebooted ok.

I finally got Intrepid installed. The solution was to search the attic
for an old CD-ROM drive from 1999 and use it during installation.
The failing drive is:

Model no. AD-7173A
The working solution:

I have the exact same issue here - Ubuntu 9.04-amd64 with firefox
"3.0.10+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1". For me, it crashes immediately after
startup when I right-click on any item in the bookmarks toolbar.
Backtrace from the core file looks like this:
#0 0x7fece830df3b in raise () from /lib/lib
It still occurs for me as well in Karmic.

I can confirm this. When clicking "Aktivera växling", the statusbar says
"Inaktiverar växlingsutrymme...", quite the opposite of what was
expected as it looked as if the partition was inactive.
But when displaying the info for an active swap partitition it correctly

bug #274396 is a duplicate of this one. In that bug it states that you
should "Save debug logs", but that isn't possible since it doesn't

I'm testing this on the released version 8.10. So it a
Good point. Though rules weren't reloaded at least when i tested on a
hardy 8.04 live-cd. That should be reproducible. I had to do that
manually. I can test again with Intrepid if you want.
So I guess the question is at which point was the functionality Colin
