I have the same problem,

It is about 10% of my DVDs that fail, same ones all the time. Using
windows they work but not with VLC (unless opened with "no DVD menus".

Now I have a copy of most of my DVDs on my hard drive as ISO. VLC can
play the ISO files as if it was a DVD. Very nice for my since my kids
will not scratch the DVDs this way.

But those DVDs with the menus problem I can not play from ISO because I
dont know how to open an ISO with "no DVD menus".
